The 2014 Club diaries and membership stickers are now available for collection from the Professional shop. We do not intend to post out the diaries unless specifically requested.
As you are aware there has been ongoing case against the HMRC in respect of VAT paid on visitor green fees.
The lead case was by Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club v HMRC and was being argued for Bridport by KPMG. The Judge at the Tribunal asked the European Court of Justice for a ruling on VAT applied to green fees by HMRC before a decision could be given on the Bridport and West Dorset Golf Club case. The case was heard at the ECJ on Thursday and the good news is that the ECJ has ruled that no VAT should be applied to Non-Profit making Golf Club’s on any type of temporary membership fee/visitor green fee.
It is all very positive news but does not yet mean we have the cash, it is still too early to celebrate. The ruling is now passed back to the Tribunal where the judge at this court will make a definitive ruling based on the ECJ ruling, so we are still a bit away before a final result but I’ll keep you updated as things progress.

News from the Ladies’ Captain - Jane Best
The Ladies' Christmas Lunch event – Thursday 12th Dec 2013
It was a fantastic day from start to finish. The ladies enjoyed a warm glass of mulled wine and a delicious mince pie before they teed off in the morning to play for the Christmas Lladro Trophy.
Lunch was delicious and we were so well looked after by Huckleberry’s Kitchen - Samantha, Russell, Ian and all the staff. Once again, Kate Dixon provided the beautifully presented prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Jan Villa won 1st prize and the Lladro Trophy and as can be seen from the photo below – she was absolutely thrilled!!
The surprise guest was a very well kept secret – the ladies committee were sworn to secrecy so when I announced that someone was about to come and lead the ladies in singing some Christmas songs, the ladies were momentarily stunned into silence and then disbelief when ‘Elvis’ came in singing ‘Blue Christmas’. It didn’t take long before the room erupted and Elvis (Garry Foley) received a rapturous round of applause.
He was fantastic, and the way he ‘worked the room’ was a thing of wonder!! No lady was left unmoved; some had to move over so that Elvis could share their chair, others were straddled (but didn’t seem to mind at all) one ex lady captain lay on the floor beneath his feet (and then needed to be helped up) others took the opportunity just to touch him…..I just waited for him to come to me – it was worth the wait.
New Year’s Eve can’t come soon enough when we can have some more of Garry at the Club and then there’s always Valentine’s Day in Blandford for those like me, who just can’t get enough.
I’m sailing from Southampton on Thursday 19th Dec - the start of a 10 day Christmas cruise. I have been praying for calm seas but the forecast for the journey through the Bay of Biscay is not good. I leave you with one of Garrison Keillor’s gems would seem to be appropriate for us all at this time………..…..
“A lovely thing about Christmas is that it's compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together.”
Club Captain - Allan Hutchins
As expected this year has flown by and as the New Year approaches please accept my best wishes to you and your family for Christmas. I would like to thank you for the support you have shown and the many kind words of encouragement along the way.
Have a great New Year whatever you are doing and I look forward to seeing you in 2014 if not before.
Weekly Course Report
Hello again and welcome to the last course update before Xmas.
Eventually the dry spell was set to break down and during the last week it certainly has done just that!
As seems to be the trend over the last couple of years when the rain comes it doesn’t just drizzle but appears to drop huge amounts of rainfall. Rain has fallen at some stage pretty much every day during the last week and the total has come to 110mm or just over 4 inches!(this doesn't include todays rainfall!) With this amount of rain falling in a very short time the course invariably struggles to cope with draining it straight away. For that reason unfortunately the course has been closed a few times in the last week. In general the greens are holding up fairly well but the problem arises around the edges and particularly walk offs and high traffic routes. With high numbers of golfers walking over the same areas it doesn’t take long for the grass to cut up and become a muddy mess.Obviously we regularly move rope fences to direct away from these places but eventually this becomes very difficult as all areas begin to get badly worn. A typical example of this is around the 4th green area. To the right and behind the green is very wet at the moment due to the surrounding land shedding all the water to the lowest area. Ropes are moved regularly on the right but this area is now starting to cut up. The bank to the left is also wearing so it becomes very difficult to steer golfers around the green. Whilst on this subject if consideration could be given to possibly carrying golf bags at times if able to do so instead of trolleys this would help the course hugely. On the plus side the course does drain relatively quickly and normally after a day or so and with a good strong breeze the course has dried out well enough to open once more. I think it is important to understand, as already mentioned, when we do get rain it is very big amounts and that we are not alone in these conditions.
The picture below shows the problem at 4th, sand will be spread across this area to help a little.
Onto other things and it has been a busy spell to try and complete the new 5th tee before Xmas. This week another nine pallets of turf arrived to cover the tee banks and surrounding areas. The path is now complete and heather has been transplanted from areas around the course to give some character whilst approaching the new tee.
Heather brash will be spread across the remaining area where the old tee has been removed. Steps are really all that remain to be put in but in general everything is now complete. The team have worked very hard over the last few weeks with long hours and are all very pleased with the end result. This has been one of those jobs that gives a great deal of job satisfaction, all working well as a team and with plenty of ideas bouncing around as the project progressed.
New 5th tee
The new turf that has been put down all around the 5th tee on the banks etc is 100% fescue turf. This means that during the summer if allowed to grow long without cutting then the grass will produce tall wispy stalks and look natural similar to our heavy rough.
Away from the tee and you may have noticed that the two bunkers close to 5th green are almost now completed. The edges have been tidied with a revetted turf edge and extra heather and again the fescue turf put down.
After Xmas we will be continuing with the remaining two bunkers on 5th following a similar theme. The new right hand cross bunker will be left untouched as we are happy with how this one looks and plays.
5th Bunkers after improvement work
As we approach Xmas day and with work completed on 5th hole for now our intentions for the first part of the week will be to give the course a good tidy up prior to the festive season!
Most of the leaves are now down so a big effort on leaf clearing will be put into place.
Holes will be changed probably on Monday or Xmas eve and if weather conditions allow then a hand cut on the greens (looking unlikely!).
Again it would be nice to give tees, approaches and fairways a cut before Xmas to tidy things up but this will be all down to the weather, which I’m afraid is currently not looking to good into the next week!
A couple of the team are on hols next week however the course set up will be in place every day with the exception being Christmas Day. Two staff will be in on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day to ensure that everything is ok on the course and remove dew from greens, move tee markers and rake bunkers etc.
As I finish up all that remains is to wish you all a very Happy Christmas from myself and the team and we wish you a great New Year, enjoy the festive season and I look forward to giving you further course news and updates next year!

Pro Shop News
Well it’s another year gone by and I can’t believe it’s my 2nd Christmas already at Broadstone Golf Club. They say time fly’s when you’re having fun and I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying being here at Broadstone. You have all made me feel incredibly welcome and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support of the pro-shop and the pro-shop team.
We had our own little Christmas staff bash this week and took to the Go-Kart track for our annual Grand Prix. The driving may not match up to Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel but what we lack in ability we certainly make up for in competitiveness. After a hard fought battle the outcome was a decisive win (again) for Barry. He’s a good golfer but if he ever wanted to consider another profession then he should look at motor racing. Andy came in second place for the second year running and seems to be much more comfortable handling a hairpin at 40mph than hitting a 10 yard chip shot! Here’s for the big shock of the day….I had my first ever podium finish managing 3rd place. It seriously ranks up there amongst any of my lifetime achievements after qualifying a dismal 6th place on the grid after spending as much time in the tyre barriers as on the track in qualifying. My task was made a bit easier though as Jonny and Dean Bridges decided to have a chat on the grid as the lights went to green and I just tootled past them and defended my position for the next 20 mins. Chuffed to bits!! Poor old Chris Harrison finished a very distant last and was lapped more times than he could remember. I’m not saying he was slow but you would have thought he was out for nice Sunday meandering drive, pack of crisps between his legs and a cup of tea on the go without spilling a drop. Adey probably finished the day most frustrated, after finishing 2nd in qualifying and really up for giving Barry a run for his money. Unfortunately he got a bit carried away on the second corner and spun out and my skilful (if not a bit illegal) defending technique squeezed Adey out into 4th place. A great day out!
New additions to the shop are dominated by the new TaylorMade Jetspeed range. TaylorMade have managed to fit the revolutionary speed strip into the driver and I can verify myself….it is a seriously powerful driver! As ever we have demo equipment for you to try so come and have a go.
We still have some spaces left in the Christmas Draw so grab a square whilst you can. We will be doing the draw on Christmas Eve and will post the results asap.
It only leaves me now to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a great golfing 2104.
Thank you again for the continued support.
