Before we start this weeks results round up, two big thank you's.

Firstly to all members who gave up the course so that we could host the Dorset County Ladies Championships, your patience is greatly appreciated. Secondly, thank you to all of the volunteer helpers for your ball spotting exploits, especially Lady Captain Sue Jackson who combined organising all of the volunteer efforts as well as playing in the event!

Through the week…

Monday’s match was the Ladies Scratch Knockout, the Humphreys Bowl, where Cathy Macfarlane-Thompson, Carol Cass & Di Freda beat Lyme Regis, 2 -1. Well played Ladies.

On Tuesday the Volunteers Cup took place, where Alaine Coyne took the top spot with a score of 35 points. In second place was Rose Warwick, who shot 33 points and beat Maggie Bray on countback who took third place. Well done to all who took part!

Wednesday’s saw the opening day of the DLCGA championships, where we welcomed 58 ladies to play over the 5 days. The first three days was the Johnston Cup, an event for 12-20 handicap golfers, where we had some excellent scores throughout.

The 18 hole qualifying round was on Wednesday where Kate Roberts won the Threfall Cup for the best gross score of 86, nett 72, with Maggie Bray the runner up with a gross 92, nett 76.

The top 16 of this event qualified for the knockout stages on Thursday and Friday. Including Kate, Maggie, and other Broadstone members, Lady Captain Sue Jackson, Helen Cloney, and Debbie Driver.

With two Broadstone Ladies progressing to the semi-final and subsequently drawn against each other, where Kate Roberts won 2&1 against Sue Jackson. Kate went into the final where she played Shannon Stobbs (Yeovil), a very tight match where Kate took the win on the 18th with an excellent up and down to win the hole. Kate Roberts won the Johnstone Cup, as well as picking up the Threfall Cup (best gross) and the Sugden Salver (best nett). Maggie Bray was the Gross Runner Up. Well done to all the Broadstone Ladies who took part, and huge congratulations to Kate Roberts.

On Friday the start of the scratch competition took place, where we had a number of excellent scores from our Broadstone Ladies. Well done to all of them but two in particular to note. In the first round, Jo Hadley acheieved the best nett score with a gross 78, nett 70 and a cut from 7.8 to 6.6. Another one to mention is 10 year old Sienna Birch, who qualified for the weekend with a fantastic 36 hole score of 166 and winning the best nett score, with two nett 71 rounds. Her handicap was cut from 12.4 to 11.0 in the process. We are very fortunate to have so many promising girl golfers in our junior ranks.

Overall, we had 6 Broadstone Ladies qualify for the weekend, Sienna, Jo, Cathy Macfarlane Thompson, Becky Hobell, Di Freda & Carol Cass. Well done to Becky and Carol who made it through to the Saturday afternoon, Becky being beaten by the eventual winnner.

The Final was between Alice and Mel, where it went the distance and saw Alice triumph on the 18th hole with a long putt to birdie. Well played to all the ladies who took part.

County Championship Winner Alice Plumb (Sherborne) with the trophy.

Another result from last week saw Becky Hobell (and her playing partner Megan Withnall of Ferndown) win the Dorset School team championship at Weymouth where Becky shot the second lowest gross score of 78.

Both players now progress to represent Dorset individually in the South West regional at The Players Club in Bristol and are both through to the final, which will be played at Woodhall Spa in July. Good luck Becky!
